Pastels look like big chunks of pigment…and they are.  There are some things to know about how an artist works in pastel and also about how to care for a fine art piece done with pastel.

Big, soft, chalky pastels.

Hard, square pastel sticks.

Layering pastel mark-by-mark on sanded paper…sanded paper holds the ‘dust’ so much better than smooth paper.

Blending the marks is part of the art of pastel.

Pastels are matted and framed under glass with 'spacers' so that neither the glass nor the mat touch the artwork. This method protects the artwork from deterioration and allows space for any loose dust to fall out of view.
